Andrew Green’s Notet:
(CD Release Show for Silent D on Shifting Paradigm Records)
Although a collective musically, The Notet is the brainchild of NYC-based guitarist Andrew Green. Having worked with trombonist JC Sanford (Green’s longtime roommate and now Minnesota resident), bassist Jorge Roeder (Kenny Werner, Julian Lage), and alto saxophonist Jeremy Udden (Either/Orchestra, John McNeil) in various contexts for a number of years, Green had a good idea of the level of musical compatibility that would be evinced in a recording situation. The idea was to be spontaneous and unplanned—just four close musical associates and playing familiar tunes and occasionally making one up on the spot. To enhance the natural feeling of connection, the drummerless quartet recorded with everyone in the same room, old school. No plan, no arrangements, no discussion of who was doing what; just picked a tune and a tempo, then counted it off. They recorded several sessions and chose favorite tracks for release. The group achieved a collective emphasis on idea-based improvisation and interplay in lieu of pyrotechnics. Many of the tracks feature multiple solos/collective improvisation for much of the time—letting the musical ideas dictate the direction. Andy and JC are psyched to be joined by the Twin Cities’ own Chris Bates on bass and Chris Thomson on sax to help celebrate the release of their CD Silent D on Shifting Paradigm Records.
Andrew Green is a guitarist, author, and arranger residing in New York City. A professional musician since the age of 15, he has played with Donald Byrd, Billy Hart, Joanne Brackeen, Marion Cowings, Mat Maneri, John McNeil, Winard Harper, Chip Jackson, Matt Wilson, Danny Mixon, Ralph LaLama, and Sound Assembly, among others. He is the author of three best-selling guitar books: Jazz Guitar Comping, Jazz Guitar Technique, and Jazz Guitar Structures, all of which are available through Mel Bay Publications. Andrew’s arranging chops are demonstrated on the highly acclaimed CD, Narrow Margin which features Bill McHenry, Russ Johnson, JC Sanford, Mark Ferber, and John Hebert—chosen a top 10 CD for 2010 by Cadence Magazine reviewer’s poll.
