In 2012 FireFlyForest released “Ballet,” a whimsical and exploratory album suffused with found sounds and improvised explorations from personnel including Sean Carey (S. Carey, Bon Iver), Ben Lester (Field Report, AA Bondy), and Shane Leonard (Field Report). FireFlyForest re-emerged in 2015 with a new sound, pulling audiences out of quiet exploration and onto the dance floor. Reimagined as a worldbeat fusion band, its core is a rhythm section of Nathan Eliot (guitar), Jeff Schraw (drumkit), Natalie Locke (West African percussion), Sarah Larsson (dumbek/French horn), and Yohannes Tona (bass). Steven Hobert leads the band on keyboards and accordion, and keeps it in the family with sister Kathleen Hobert on lead vocals and tap dancing. Influences include Bela Fleck, Fela Kuti, Hamza el Din, Beirut, Andrew Bird, Paul Simon, Bobby McFerrin, and Mercedes Sosa. FireFlyForest presents bold performances fired by a strong improvisational instinct and musicality that ranges from rich and playful to delicate and contemplative.
